I am too busy right now to do FNR any justice. Between my last semester of school, interning at Marvel, traveling between NYC and New Paltz multiple times a week, Ghost Mall, Cosmo Memory and work, I might explode. I just don't have the time to dedicate to this right now. That being said, I do have some big ideas and FNR will be reincarnated in 2011 as something (hopefully) bigger and better.

Despite my love for Sparks and their rousing tune "This Town Ain't Big Enough For the Both of Us" ( which is appropriately but surprisingly used in Kick-Ass), I could not be happier to introduce another New Paltz-based record label to you.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Responsible Records.

This little cassette label has their wares available at shows, at local New Paltz record store Rhino Records and for order on their website. Although I have nothing to do with them, I am very happy to see another outlet for artists open up in New Paltz.

FNR Update #12

It has been slow goings here at FNR HQ. There has been a severe lack of updates etc.Here I am to rectify the situation.

-Official release for GHOST MALL's "Goons" EP will be sometime in the first week of August. Tapes, 12" and digital release on iTunes. We'll also have it for free here on FNR for a bit.

-Friendly Neighborhood favorites SUNSHOWER ORPHANS have a 12" coming out in August. It is called "From the Fire Escapes." One of the tracks is "Polly Ana" which we put out here!

Other than that, look forward to more updates. The next release is on the schedule on your right.

It's for drives around the block to 7-11 with your friends when all you need is just a fucking Slurpee and you'll be alright.

As it turns out, he opened for us while on our tour this Spring and we fell head over heels for his quirky little songs about love and loss. One of the other bands that night summed him up perfectly: "Daniel Johnston plus comedy and minus the mental illness." This kid is for real.

FN Records Update #9

Hello all.

There has been a flurry of activity round these parts lately. It is with great pleasure that I have revived this venture. Touring with Ghost Mall and the headaches and heartaches surrounding that adventure kind of forced me to put FNR on the back burner.

But it's given me a lot of time to think about the future of this. As it stands right now, this is just a dumping ground for the music that me and my friends make. That's cool but I'm not satisfied. I love giving away music for free but I need to produce something real. I want something I can touch that when I find it in my attic 50 years from now I can pop in a tape deck (will they still have those in 2060?) or on a record player and remember that I was doing something when I was 21.

Maybe that's a little selfish. Maybe it's not. You decide.

The following news will have a little to do with my thoughts about the future of FNR.

-There will be, at the very least, 2 cassette releases this summer. One will definitely be GHOST MALL's "Goons" EP. The other has not been decided yet. But I have some ideas.

-SUNSHOWER ORPHANS is done recording! They will be releasing a six song EP on STATE CAPITAL RECORDS. 12" vinyl, baby. It's gonna be good.

-Please welcome MILES NIGHTHAWK! and SHOT NOT to the Friendly Neighborhood family! We met Miles Nighthawk! down in North Carolina. I've totally slept on the floor of his bedroom. He makes funny, little songs about girls and love. You know, the important stuff. Shot Not features a former member of the Wire Hangovers and are chock full of some nice punk nuggets. I'm very excited to be releasing them both.

-Very soon, Friendly Neighborhood will be involved in the next compilation from the CAKE LIFE COLLECTIVE. We are doing a split comp so expect some mostly previously unreleased tunes from a bunch of FNR bands and a gaggle of songs from bands involved with Cake Life.

That's about it. So you know, physical releases. Think about them. Start saving up now.

QUARTERBACKS and John Warren Present A Symbiotic Split

QUARTERBACKS is the music project of Maddie and Dean that since this has been recorded is sadly mostly defunct. But their fun little twee pop tunes are here in acoustic form as opposed to electric guitar plus snare and hi-hat combo, to better complement Mr. Warren.

JOHN WARREN has the honor of being the first artist ever released by FNR. The songs on this particular release are older than those on Survival Songs but still display an earnestness that can be found in all of his music.

Both John and Dean are two of the most prolific songwriters around. FNR will soon be releasing John Warren's full-length Drink Less, Sleep More and for more of Dean's music check out Minor Constellations and Ken Griffey Junior.

If you are not on tour or the owner of your own Waffle House franchise, you have one foot planted firmly in the grave. And when I say that I really mean that if you aren’t doing something you love, then you are clearly missing the point of life, the universe and everything.

Over Spring Break, I went on tour with my best buds in Ghost Mall. We played 8 shows in Ten days from March 11 to March 20. We played in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana (I’m starting to feel like Howard Dean), South Carolina and stopped in every state in between mostly because of my band mates’ overactive bladders. I learned a few lessons about touring and life that I will share with you free of charge.

1. No matter how many times you check to make sure you have everything, you will always forget something. Minutes after getting on the NYS Thruway, I realized that I had forgotten the hi-hat stand. Where did I leave it? In the middle of the kitchen. When was the last time I was in the kitchen? Immediately before we left, I thought it was crucial to bring a can of beans with us. I also forgot my jacket.

2. If a band you are playing with has a scary live show, chances are that their house where you are staying will be too. We stayed with Three-Brained Robot in NC. His set was insane! Crazy puppets and strobe lights. It was as terrifying as it was enjoyable and Sam, the man behind it all, was super nice, nice enough to let us stay at his place. But his place had a ton of owls around. Plus when your host says “All the other bands that have ever stayed here are in the basement, you’ll be meeting them soon” right before he goes to bed, you know you are getting much sleep even if he was just kidding.

3. Anybody named “Baby Huey” is probably incredible and you should befriend them. ‘Nuff said.

4. Don’t ever have any rules about pooping. Alex, my keyboardist, can attest to this. He had to go but we were at a bar. His rule was to never poop at bars. His rule soon changed to “Poop whenever you can,” after he had to wait over 3 hours before unloading.

5. The South is awesome. What’s not to love about a place with a Waffle House on every corner and incredibly nice people at every turn? Seriously, if someone told me that I had to move to Mississippi or Texas. I’d do it in a heartbeat. One of the promoters we met paid us even though originally he said we probably wouldn’t get paid AND he bought me a shot. In South Carolina, we made money at a benefit show because besides paying admission for the charity, people DONATED money to us. Another band even took us out to eat once. Show me a band in Brooklyn or Manhattan that would pay for 6 meals.

6. Never believe Bank of America when you call in to check your balance. I am currently $195 dollars in the hole because they decided that it was way easier to fuck me with the long, hard reality of four 35 dollar overdraft charges rather than tell me how much money I actually have.

7. It is always better to play than to skip a show in order to drive. You never know who you might meet. We were absolutely floored by the generosity of South Carolinians especially since we contemplated backing out of the show. They bought a ton of merch and made for one of the best shows on tour.

8. Despite what you think, you are not developing a Southern accent just because you spend a week in the South. We were all pretty convinced that we were getting accents. To the point where, after saying something, we would ask each toher if it sounded like a Southern accent. It didn’t. We were just trapped in a car with each other for too long.

9. If a cop asks you if that dude you sort of know that’s passed out on a lawn near where you were staying is your friend, just say yes. Hell, even if you don’t know him, say you do. That guy probably just had nowhere to crash. In our case, it was our friend from The Shakes who was supposed to stay at the house we were at but part of the address had rubbed off of his arm and he didn’t know where to go.

10. When in doubt, throw on the classic rock station. There is almost never a bad song on and as long as you don’t get sick of “Rock the Casbah” or “Don’t Stop Believin’” You’ll be alright.

As the great Henry Rollins has said “Knowledge without mileage is bullshit.” I assure that I’ve gone the distance to back all of this up.

Hello all,

I figured out a way to make Mediafire work for me! New releases are coming very soon!

Here's a rundown of some news:

-Sunshower Orphans is recording a new 7"!!!!!! This is exciting news as it will feature "Polly Ana" and "Everything Got Sparse." But this also means that it is no longer available for free from FNR as per the request of their sugar daddy.

-Ghost Mall record is done! Waiting for it to be mixed. Coming out in early March?

-Ghost Mall tour is still being booked! We have two definite dates but we are still looking to fill March 12,14,15,16,17 and 19. Check the myspace to see where we are and if you can help.

-Secret show this Saturday! GHOST MALL w/ Bizarro Me, Timesshares, Minor Constellations and Tom Christie. Here's the flyer made by MC's Dean Engle:

-Everyone's favorite twee punx, QUARTERBACKS, broke up. Luckily, FNR has exclusive rights to release a compendium of their material.

-Ghost Mall will be on the cover of Young Eight Four Five.

We are just worn out from the holidays. Here's the plan for 2010:

1. Revamp this here Web site.
2. Put out more stuff that we've been sitting on like Wood Burning Stoves, Anthony Parks, QBs/John Warren etc.
3. Throw more shows.
4. Make more friends.
5. Read more books.
6. Play more Modern Warfare 2.

Other news:

-Ghost Mall will hopefully finish recording on 1/12/10.

-The December 23rd benefit show raised around $500 bucks for Showpaper! That's incredible.

-Want to do a Spring compilation. Need more bands. Send me your things.

First of all I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the Ghost Mall Tour 2010 Kickstarter Project. We are 58% of the way there!

Sorry we've been so absent. The end of the semester is rough. Here is some news and some things to look forward to:

-First of all, SHOW TOMORROW! 8pm at KITTY CITY in New Paltz. The lineup is The Whiskey Diary, John Warren, Wood Burning Stoves, feelings. and Ghost Mall. Get psyched! $3-5 donations.

-We have a new contributor, Nikki Wertheim. She'll be helping with posting little album burbs etc. I used to work with her on The New Paltz Oracle. She rules.

-Speaking of Nikki, her first post will be today. We are releasing the Wood Burning Stoves' EP.

-There will be a winter compilation coming out. Keep an eye out.

-QUARTERBACKS and John Warren are doing a split!

-We are releasing Anthony Parks' record next week!

-Ghost Mall has been recording. It is looking like a 6 song EP or whatever you want to call it. 4 songs are practically done. 2 have yet to have any work done on them yet. It's all going really well. We're looking at a February 2010 release.

-Sunshower Orphans finally has their shit together! They have four shows lined up. Go see them. They are fantastic. Also, I heard they covered Ghost Mall at their last practice.

Here's the deal.

Ghost Mall wants to go on tour but we're broke. So we teamed up with Kickstarter to procure some funds. Depending on how much you pledge, you get a different reward! If we don't make the $1000 then we don't get any of it. Also, the money you pledge does not get charged to your account until February 19th 2010. So if you dig Ghost Mall, we would be syched if you could pledge some of your hard earned funds.

Sunshower Orphans is one of my favorite bands. It is only fitting that my favorite song is the a-side of this digital single. Sure, there may be a lot of bands doing the whole Loveless worshipping wall of sound type thing. But this isn't hero worship. This is learned pop prowess. "Polly Anastasia" is shoegaze at it's finest. Just wait until the ba da ba's kick in.

So we have actually started stuff here at FNR. Moving to Tumblr was a fail. Something about it didn't quite sit right with me.

Fire to Wood is Mike Godici. He is a ramblin', travelin' man. At this very moment I have no idea where he is but I'm never surprised to hear that he's wandering around this country of ours. His music is for riding across state lines in a kind stranger's car. Travel-worn, cigarette stained front porch acoustic folk songs for loving and living in squalor.

This is a record about living and almost giving up. This is a record for your closest friends to throw on as the night is winding down and your buzz is wearing off. This record will say to them all the words you're too embarrassed to slur.

First things first, Ghost Mall is recording this weekend with DJ Teenwolf of Ninjasonik fame (or infamy?). We are psyched. Don't know what part FNR will play in this but there will be updates.

Now onto the videos.

These are from a July 24th show at The Tank in NYC. Ghost Mall, Sunshower Orphans and a band who will not be named because they are rude played.
